The Neighbourhoods

Lets talk about living in Santa Marta and the neighbourhoods. The most popular neighbourhoods to live in Santa Marta are Historic Center, Rodadero  Cabo Tortuga, Pozo Colorados, Playa Salguero, Los Cocos all of these are close to the beach. The rent for many of these locations is anything  from 2 million pesos per month  and up. Other more up market areas that are a little further from the beach are Barrio Jardin and Bavaria these are Estrato 6 neighbours where the taxes, bills and rents are some of the highest. 

There are a few expats in Santa Marta living in other barrios and neighboods such as Gaira, Bonda, Minca, Taganga in these neighbourhoods you get more of a feel of how Colombian life really is.

The cost of living in Santa Marta will depend on the neighbourhood in which you are living and also where you buy your groceries. For example if you are shopping in Carulla your shopping is going to cost way more than if you are shopping in a mercado  campesino.

Internet

The price of the internet is pretty much the same for everyone  around 120000 pesos per month. The most reliable  seems  to be Movistar. There can also be a waiting list to be connected as there may not be enough lines where you are living. Other providers include Tigo and Claro.

Gas

The gas is the most reliable service in Santa Marta nobody seems to have a problem with them. Again prices differ from how much you are using it and which Estrato you are living. A Estrato 3 4 bedroom house with 2 people living there can expect to pay around 20000 pesos per month,

Water

The Water which is run by Essmar E.S.P.  Again prices differ from how much you are using it and which Estrato you are living. A Estrato 3 4 bedroom house with 2 people living there can expect to pay around 40000 pesos per month,

Electricity

The Electricity is run by Air-E. This can be a little unreliable depending  on where you are living. The power can sometimes be off all day  for maintenance usually on a Sunday. But this has been improving. The electricity would often cut out during periods of heavy rain and thunderstorms. Most of the upmarket apartments have their own generators.  Again prices differ from how much you are using it and which Estrato you are living. A Estrato 3 4 bedroom house with 2 people living there can expect to pay around 120000 pesos per month if you are just using a fan and double that if you are using air conditioning. Estrato 6 properties the average monthly electricity bill could be upwards of 400000 per month.
